1. What does “visa transfer” mean?
A visa transfer refers to the migration of a valid Indian visa from an old passport to a new one (e.g., due to passport expiry, damage, or name change), without reapplying for a new visa.
2. Am I eligible to transfer my Indian visa?
You can apply if:
– Your Indian visa is still valid, and
– You’ve obtained a new passport (due to expiration, damage, loss, or name changes),
– Your visa is not an eVisa (eVisas are not transferable and must be reapplied for online).
3. What documents do I need to submit?
– Old passport with the valid Indian visa
– New passport
– Visa transfer application form (available at ICAC)
– Recent passport-sized photographs
– Copy of Thai visa/residence permit (if applicable)
– Declaration letter (reason for transfer request)
4. What’s the processing time for a visa transfer?
The typical processing time is 3 to 5 working days, subject to approval by the Indian Embassy.
5. What are the charges for this service?
There is a service fee charged by ICAC in addition to a nominal embassy processing fee. Contact ICAC for the latest pricing.
6. Can I use the old passport with visa + new passport together for travel?
Technically, Indian immigration may allow entry with both passports, but airlines or immigration at other checkpoints may deny boarding. It’s strongly advised to transfer the visa formally to avoid travel issues.
7. Is prior appointment required for visa transfer?
While walk-ins may be accepted at some ICAC centers, it is recommended to book an appointment online or by calling the center to avoid wait times.
8. Can I transfer a visa that has already expired?
No. Only valid visas can be transferred. For expired visas, you will need to apply for a new visa.
9. Can I still get my visa transferred if my old passport is lost?
No. If the passport containing the visa is lost, the visa cannot be transferred. You will need to apply for a new visa with a lost passport report.
10. Which ICAC centers offer visa transfer services?
Visa transfer services are available at the main ICAC offices in:
– Bangkok
– Chiang Mai
